I have no clue. Woke up to a major (348 packages to) update. I made the update and the fonts that were displayed changed. Here is the before:

What you’re seeing in the ‘after’ is me rolling back to before the update. I have no clue what has happened here, I’ll continue to monitor the situation.
Apparently it’s local to this desktop computer. I checked with a USB installation and the uprade went off fine.

Back to the Desktop. I did the update and it appears, for some reason, that the graphical environment is inactive upon booting into the system. Examining the journal I found this, among other things…
dbus reply error: [ “org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner” ] “Could not activate remote peer ‘org.freedesktop.portal.Desktop’: startup job failed”
…so it appears that running this update breaks my system for now. I rolled back for now, will further investigate later today. I only found that because I noticed that Flameshot was throwing errors and not taking screenshots.
After some further testing. I updated ‘fontconfig’ by itself and reloaded my conkys, and the problem returned. So it appears I have isolated the culprit. Why it’s doing it on this one lone system though is currently under inspection. It may be that the cause could be the fact that I’m using XLibre instead of straight Xorg. I’ll keep you informed.
