External monitors stopped working

Hi,

This is my first post on this forum, so I’m not sure if I’m posting in the right place. Apologies if it’s not.

I’m looking for advice on the following issue:

I’ve been using Mabox for a long time without any problems. I have a ThinkPad laptop connected to two external monitors via a Lenovo docking station.

This morning, when I started the computer, I was greeted with the usual login screen, and both external monitors displayed the login dialog as expected. However, after logging in, all the screens, including the laptop’s screen, turn black, and only the mouse cursor is visible, which I can move across the screens.

The OS seems to respond to actions because I’m able to blindly open a terminal and either log off or reboot. Unfortunately, rebooting doesn’t solve the problem—it repeats the same behavior. The external monitors and the laptop screen display the content (login screen) properly, but everything goes black after logging in, except for the mouse cursor.

I have not installed or upgraded any package recently that could be relevant to the issue.

Has anyone faced this issue before, or can someone recommend a way to troubleshoot or fix it?

Many thanks in advance!

EDIT:

I tried disconnecting the external monitors, and the laptop works properly without them.

Next, I connected the external monitors one by one directly to the laptop and turned them on using LXRandr, but the same issue occurred:

Both the monitor and the laptop screen turned black. Only the mouse pointer is visible, and when I move it, the pointer changes based on the area it moves over (e.g., changing shape when hovering over certain parts), but nothing else is displayed—the screens remain completely black.

So, I guess it’s not an issue with the monitors (they display everything properly at the login screen), nor the docking station, since the problem also occurs when I connect the monitors directly to the laptop.

Hi @parsley.ch ,

Welcome to the forum.

To help troubleshoot your issue, could you provide the following details:

  • The graphics card you’re using (you can check with lspci | grep VGA).
  • Your Manjaro version and kernel (you can check with inxi -F or uname -r).
  • Are you using any proprietary drivers for graphics, or are you on open-source ones?
  • Could you provide the Xorg log files (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) or any errors from journalctl -xe?
  • Did you recently install any updates or make changes to your system? (change of kernel)

Thank you for the quick response.

Before following the suggested steps, I tried installing the 6.12.1-4 kernel to replace the 6.6.63-1, and that resolved the issue—I no longer experience the problem.

What was really strange is that I hadn’t applied any updates or changes before the problem occurred.

Anyway, the problem is solved now. Thanks for the assistance.
