Hi-
I am a new Mabox user (and loving it) coming from OpenSuse and BunsenLabs. The machine is an Asus Zenbook UM433D laptop running the latest Mabox (21.06) that has been fully updated.
The problem is that my speakers stopped working at some point. They used to work under Mabox but stopped, I think after I installed something. I have installed a number of apps, but always through either the Mabox Install Popular Apps, yay, or just unpacking a TAR.GZ file. I am a proficient Linux user but have little knowledge of the deep internals.
Here is what I have tried, all unsuccessful:
- Made sure the hardware key to mute the speakers was not on
- Tried multiple apps (Firefox and mpv)
- Made sure the BIOS wasn’t disabling the speaker
When I play sound, the ‘meter’ on pavucontrol does move, so the audio signal is getting to it.
Below are some commands with their output. Sorry it is so large, but I am not certain what will be helpful.
Any ideas what might help the speaker issue?
Since the signal is getting to pavucontrol, I am wondering if maybe reinstalling the audio driver would help? If so, how do I find the right audio driver and how do I reinstall it.

Hi.
Test sound with this command in terminal : speaker-test -t wav -c 6
Try this first and let soundtest run while checking:
Open alsamixer in terminal and check the channels there. It is easier to use and check if anything is muted or at zero volume. Press M on all muted channels and increase volume . Press F6 to see the soundcards available and change card if its wrong. Disable auto-mute mode in alsamixer. Use arrow to the right to find it.
This will reset pulseaudio and create new config for pulse.
rm -r ~/.config/pulse or mv ~/.config/pulse ~/.config/old-pulse if you want to keep you old config
pulseaudio -k This will kill all instances of pulseaudio and create a new config.
systemctl --user restart pulseaudio
This will reload the drivers
sudo alsa force-reload
Still no sound?

I hate to be that guy, but sadly enough it happened to the right speaker of my Dell XPS 13 recently and was driving me crazy until I went back to troubleshooting basics: Is it plugged in?
Have you opened the laptop case to check the physical connection of the speakers?
It’s entirely possible the connection got jostled loose over time. I’d take a quick look at that before going too crazy into diagnostics.

I have had no luck with any of your suggestions, especially running `sudo alsa force-reload`. For whatever reason, my system does not have the `alsa` executable. Here are all the alsa\* files in `/usr/bin/`:

What does the lack of the alsa executable indicate, and how do I get it? (I tried a web search but did not find anything.)

I don’t know if it is helpful, but I get somewhat different results if I sudo the command:

Thanks for the suggestion moonburn, but no problem in being ‘that guy’. Unfortunately, that is not the problem I am having. My system dual boots with Win 10 and the speakers are fine under that OS.

Can you give the output of aplay -L | grep :CARD and pacman -Qqs pulse ?
And what exactly did you install or remove at some point that made the sound go missing?

From Arch Wiki: “ALSA is a set of built-in Linux kernel modules. Therefore, manual installation is not necessary.” In other words. No alsa exec:)
Try this from arch wiki: amixer -D pulse sset Master toggle
This will cause amixer to ask PulseAudio to do the toggling rather than toggling it directly. Because of this, PulseAudio will correctly unmute Master as well as any applicable output.
This will disable auto mute Mode on startup:
sudo amixer -c 0 sset “Auto-Mute Mode” Disabled
Did you install firmware for your laptop? make sure you have sof-firmware, alsa-firmware and alsa-ucm-conf installed if you have a never laptop.
If nothing works you need to concider reinstalling soundsystem since you obviously did something to your system installing software wich you now can’t remember 🙂
